Newsletter Term 3 Week 2 2019

Principal

Ms toni riordan

This week

In this last week we have celebrated the academic achievers of Semester 1, 2019 and acknowledged girls who have demonstrated academic progress by increasing their GPAs. Year 9 students bravely met the challenges of camp and senior school students participating in QGSSSA winter fixtures experienced a brisk morning at St Hilda’s in their first round of games.

Safe on Social Media

On Wednesday evening, we are very pleased to host ‘Safe on Social’, a Parent Information Evening with Kirra Pendergast. Ms Pendergast is recognised by the E-Safety Commissioner and the Anglican Schools Commission as working at the forefront in educating the Australian Community about cyber safety. We know the need for our young people to be better equipped when it comes to understanding social media platforms. ‘The Safe on Social’ face-to-face presentation and Q&A session will deliver real life case studies and strategies to help parents support their children. Tickets are free for this Adult (18+) event but we ask you to RSVP. Further details can be accessed via this link.

Screen Time

The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne regularly conducts the Australian Child Health Poll (ACHP), which surveys Australian parents in relation to the household use of screen-based devices (including televisions, computers, laptops, gaming consoles, iPhones, smartphones, iPads and other tablet devices). Findings include:

• Almost all Australian teenagers, two-thirds of primary school-aged children and one-third of pre-schoolers now own their own tablet or smartphone

• Teenagers spend the most amount of time on a screen-based device at home, of any age group

• Three quarters of parents of children under six do not put time limits on screen use.

• 85 per cent of parents of young children (aged less than 6 years) said they used screen-based devices to occupy their children so they could get things done with one in four doing this every day of the week

• Three in four teenagers, and one in six primary school-aged children, have their own social media accounts

• Almost half of children regularly use screen-based devices at bedtime, with one in four children reporting sleep problems as a result

• Teenagers using screens routinely at bedtime were also more likely to report experiencing online bullying

• 50 per cent of toddlers and pre-schoolers are using a screen-based device without supervision.

We urge parents to monitor their children’s use of devices, especially close to bedtime. We continue to support our students in encouraging their responsible use of social media though our various proactive programs and in special events such as time with Kirra Pendergast this week.

Congratulations to:

  • Olivia Doherty (Year 12) who, after her recent success at the Gymnastics National Championships, has been chosen to compete for Australia in New Zealand in October.

Best Wishes:

  • To our six Debating teams for QDU finals on Wednesday evening

  • To Junior School students for Andrews Cup Netball on Thursday

  • To our talented finalists for MADD Night on Friday evening

  • To our many Senior School students playing tennis, netball and hockey in Round 2 of QGSSSA Winter Fixtures

  • To our rowing community for the first Regatta at Wyaralong Dam

  • To our STAGE Dancers for Dancelife Unite Eisteddfod held on Saturday

Funds raised will help resource this worthwhile cause.

For the stall, we will need donations of delicious cupcakes to be brought to the Junior School Reception on the morning of the stall. If you are able to make a dozen cupcakes for the stall, please email Mrs Susie Rigby s.rigby@staidans.qld.edu.au or Mrs Jenny Sherlock jenny@sherlockc.com to let them know for catering purposes and numbers.

Cupcakes will be sold for $3.00 each on the day of the stall on Wednesday 7 August.

    Athletics Training

The full Andrews Cup Athletics squad for 2019 has been selected and announced. Please note that whilst training was initially open to all girls in Years 2 – 6, following the announcement of the Andrews Cup Athletics Squad, only girls selected will be able to continue training.

The St Aidan’s Junior School Athletics Squad will be participating in a Metro Athletic meet.  The meet will be held on a Monday 5 August at UQ Athletics Track, St. Lucia.  This will give both the girls and the coaches the opportunity to be provided with updated times and further develop their competition practice. Girls wishing to be considered for our Andrews Athletics team will need to attend the meet.  A school bus will be provided to take students to the venue.

Trainings being offered for the Athletics Season are as below:

    JS sport 1

    Andrews Cup Netball
The Andrews Cup Netball competition will be held on Thursday 25 July at Metropolitan District Netball Association at Coorparoo. The Andrews Cup teams have been announced with selections based on skill, game application, combinations and attendance.

    Andrews Cup Gymnastics
Term Three will see girls who are interested in wishing to trial for the Andrews Cup Gymnastics Team receive information as to the training and selection procedures. During the first 2 weeks of trials, girls will be expected to attend at least three of the first four sessions. This will hopefully enable the squads to be finalised as early as possible and also enable the coaches to confirm the number of weekly sessions girls will be required to attend for training. Trials will commence approximately Week 5 of Term 3.

Bus Travel to and from Ambiwerra – For Training

Please be reminded that for morning training sessions, girls should be dropped at the Ambiwerra sporting fields (Erinvale St, Corinda) by parents. At the end of the session, they will be transported to school on the school bus. In the afternoons, students will travel to Ambiwerra on the school bus (Kathleen St) and parents must collect them from the sporting fields at the designated time.

    Year 4 Beginner Band
St Aidan’s has an outstanding Classroom Music Program, and the introduction of Every Day Music from Kindergarten to Year 3 means that students are not only immersed in music, but that they are developing an independent and sophisticated understanding of essential musical skills and knowledge for the level. It is clear to the classroom and music teachers that students are reaching musical benchmarks early and with greater competence. In an attempt to ensure that students receive every opportunity to learn a musical instrument, the students in Year 4 are invited to again be part of the Beginner Band Program at St Aidan’s. The Beginner Band lessons will occur weekly on Tuesdays during assembly time (12.40pm).
